Demystifying VV and VW Settings: Variable Voltage, Wattage, and You!

What’s the difference between VV and VW? Which should I choose?

Right now, you either have a device with variable wattage (VW) and variable voltage (VV) settings, or you’re debating if you want to buy a device with one, or both, of these features. If you’re anything like me, you might have googled “VV and VW” and found a few articles, blog posts, and message boards explaining the differences between VV and VW settings in excruciating technical, scientific, and mathematical detail. Your eyes might have rolled back into your head once you reached the mathematical equation explaining the scientific wonders of Ohm’s Law, but seriously, who cares? You’re not trying to pass your high school science class, you just want to quit smoking cigarettes and start vaping already! Double settings, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Okay, just calm down, and take a few deep breaths. All that matters, is how to use VV or VW, and how these settings effect your vaping experience, and that’s all we’re going to talk about in this article. So here’s everything you need to know (in easy to understand terms) about  VV and VW settings, and how to choose between the two.

VV and VW Basics and Similarities

In order to hone in your vape for the best flavor and vapor, you need to be able to adjust the heat. If you have VV and/or VW features, you can adjust for personal taste and for the ohms resistance of the header you’re using. To put it simply, less watts or volts will result in a cooler vape, while more volts and watts will result in a hotter vape. More=hotter, less=colder. Simple!

VV and VW Differences

Now that you know the basics, let’s talk about their differences. If you have a device with both settings, you’ll have to decide which setting to choose because you can’t set different volt settings AND different watts settings at the same time; the science doesn’t work that way. Sure, I could explain why, but that would require math, and that’s boring! So, just take my word on it; you can trust me. I suffered through the science, and the maths so you don’t have to. You can thank me by putting down those nasty cancer-sticks.

Variable Voltage works by you adjusting the volts either up, or down, in order to dial in on the perfect heat level. Since different headers have different resistances, you’ll also have to change the voltage setting if you change between different resistance headers. If you change to a header with higher ohms, you’ll need to up your volts. If you change to a header with lower ohms, then you’ll need to lower your volts to get the same experience.

Think of it like your driving a car. Your speed equals heat (or watts) and the gas pedal equals volts. If you want to maintain a steady speed across various types of terrain (the terrain represents the ohms resistance of your e cig header), you need to adjust the pressure on the gas pedal with your foot. You’ll push the gas pedal harder if there’s more resistance against the car (driving up an incline/more ohms), and ease up on the gas if there’s less resistance (driving down a hill/less ohms). That’s not a perfect example, but it’s the right frame of thinking. Now you almost know how to science! To put it simply: more ohms=more volts, less ohms=less volts. Easy!

Variable Wattage works a little bit differently than VV settings. If you choose to set your watts, instead of volts, the battery automatically adjusts the voltage to provide the wattage you selected, regardless of the resistance of your header. So if you decide to switch between different ohms resistance headers, you don’t need to change your wattage setting, because your e cig battery will do the math for you, how considerate!

You can think of VW settings  like they’re cruise control settings. Instead of manually adjusting the gas pedal (volts) every time you encounter a hill,  you set your cruise control to the speed (watts) you want once. Then, the car automatically calculates how much the gas pedal should be pressed for different inclines (more ohms), or declines (less ohms), in the terrain in order to maintain your desired speed.

So what’s better, VV or VW settings?

Well, that depends on you. There are benefits and draw backs to both, so let’s look at some of them.

How deep is your wallet?

VV devices are undoubtedly more wallet friendly than devices with VW options. If money is an issue, go ahead and start with a VV device. There are many budget friendly VV batteries out there, so you have a great selection to choose from.

Do you prefer ease of use or fine tuning?

VW settings are definitely easier to use. You can literally set it and forget it. You wont have to adjust the settings every-time you change your header. For this reason, I personally prefer to use my VW settings. But in all honesty, it’s not that hard to switch your VV settings. In-fact, there are  some people who even  prefer VV  over VW because they can adjust the volts in smaller increments than watts – giving them a bit more control. But I’m lazy and can’t tell the difference, so I prefer using VW settings just because I can’t be bothered with clicking the button or spinning the VV dial; don’t judge me.

The Choice is Yours

Now that you know the differences, it’s up to you to decide. As long as you choose a device with one (or both) of these features, you can definitely feel confident that you’ll have an awesome time choosing between different flavors and headers. Just remember that VW works like cruise control, while VV is a more manual, yet fine-tuned, process. But with either setting, you will be able to harness the magic electrical power of science and finally put down those cancer-sticks for good! Vape on!

  1. Breanna, you ARE the bomb! Your explanation of variable volts and variable wattage is the one I will be showing anyone who is as confused as I was about what they do and which to use!
    The first device that I bought was a Ego Twist, a variable voltage model, which I enjoyed and still use. It was easy to learn to operate—twist the dial to a higher number, it vaped hotter—twist the dial to a lower number, it vaped cooler. Simple, right? Then I decided that I wanted something with more power so I did what any halfway intelligent woman would do…..I dove headfirst into the internet to research my options. Well, by the time I came up for air, I was pretty sure that previous estimates of my intelligence had been grossly exaggerated! Lol! Rarely in my life have I felt THAT stupid.
    Anyway, I ended up purchasing a Telsa with a nifty LED screen and umpteen different settings for V V and V W and there was stuff about ohms….. you’d laugh yourself silly if you knew how many times I tried to change the setting for the ohms on that sucker! That chart that everyone refers you to? Yeah, well, I obviously didn’t have a handle on it as I was STILL trying to change the ohms after studying the %*”-+:(#* chart! Tried to adjust the V V and the V W according to that chart and couldn’t figure out why my settings wouldn’t stay where I put them. And the instruction booklet that came with the device? Might as well have been written in Latin for all the good it did me.
    Then I remembered your site—I had bookmarked it, thank goodness—and, lo and behold, there they were! The answers to my questions! Seriously, I am so glad that SOMEONE out there understands that not everyone who vapes is a scientist, a mathematician or an electrical engineer. The analogy you came up with is easy to relate to and I’m sure that most people grasp it right away. I know I did!

I’m stubborn though (and a bit obsessive) so I did lots and lots and lots of research…but I hated that I had to spend so much time researching just to make what I felt should be an enjoyable EASY switch.

  2. O.K. Back to the feeling stupid thing again. Read another of your posts. An ohms resistance header is the thing on the bottom of your e-liquid tank that screws into the battery, yes?

      First of all, thanks for the compliment, and don’t feel stupid!! I had SO many questions when I first started 🙂

      Every type of atomizer you screw into your battery has an ohms resistance, whether it be cartomizers, clearomizers, dripping atomizers, or even rebuildable atomizers. The ohms basically measures how much, or how little, energy from the battery is being pulled. So the less resistance, the more heat you’ll get. More resistance equals less heat. (Think of it like a faucet, the tighter the faucet the higher the resistance, so less water will come out….)

      So the ohms refers to the coil itself in your atomizer – where ever it’s housed (top, middle, bottom, etc). The threading on the bottom is just the threading.

    great article…i wish more people wrote like you, I understood more from this one article than reading so many other blogs which made it even more confusing haha… and i did get the ‘gist’ of most of it…but i still have a doubt which is confusing me….

    I recently got an iTaste MVP 2.0…but it has the option of setting both the V W and V V?
    Does the MVP have a way to adjust both as per our setting or am I missing something?

    Also, my ohms resistance meter says 3.1…so what would my optimal settings be? I love a heavy vape…but don’t wanna damage the coils lol


    • Hi Krishna, you can only adjust one or the other not both. With a 3.1 ohm coil I would adjust to 10-15 watts on the MVP2

    I took the leap to an adjustable vv and vw device today without really understanding the science so to speak. After spending a couple of hours researching how best to adjust the settings and becoming totally confused by it all I stumbled across this post.

I just bought the Cherry Bomber mech mod on the recommendation of my boyfriend. Now I don’t feel so intimidated about trying it!

  8. I have to say, well done. It’s hard to find straight forward non “vape head” (no disrespect) answers. I have asked/searched for answers on far too many sites only to get answered in vape head terminology. I just want my nic fix and don’t want to learn a whole new language, (again, no disrespect intended it’s just not my thing.) It seems every site has it’s own terms for the few main parts/actions.
    You cleared up my confusion around VV/VW so hopefully you can clear up some other confused thoughts I have. I don’t care about producing Cumulus clouds from my istick 30w/GS air unit, nor do I care about hot/cold, throat/lung hits…I just want to replace regular cigs and eventually quit nicotine all together, so here goes:
    1) Is there anything I can or need to do to maximize my use of nicotine?
    2) I typically smoke a pack of regular king size cigs/day. approx 15 drags per cig, should I take 15 drags/hits at a time from my device to equal one cig or should I just take a drag or two every 10-15 minutes all day?
    3) Will VV/VW, airflow, drag length/speed… affect my amount of nicotine intake per drag?
    4) is gurgling/crackling all the time considered normal?
    5) Is 18mg a good choice for a pack/day reg strength (dumaurier) smoker?
    I’m concerned I’m going through a 10ml/18mg bottle in 1.5 -2 days.

    Sorry for the length of comment and quantity of questions, but you brought it on yourself by answering with straight forward plain English answers 😉
    P.S, I should mention, I have been nic vaping for 2-3 days now and never felt the slightest urge to grab a cig from my last pack sitting 5 feet from me and everywhere I go all I can smell is cig butts and dirty ashtrays (loving that part) however I have not felt the satisfied (post smoke) feeling from vaping that I used to get from cigs.

  10. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this post. I mean I’m a nerd myself, so I understand the impulse that lead to me finding 20 other search results filled with nothing but people posting ohms graphs and equations and blah blah blah. It shouldn’t have been this hard to get a simple answer to what I thought was true, but wasn’t sure, i.e., I don’t have to give a flying motherfig about the volts on my vv/vw device, I can just worry about the watts and the volts will adjust automatically.

  11. What you have for variable Voltage is correct but you basically said the exact same thing for variable wattage.

    Variable wattage would be like holding the pedal at one spot (to the floor for example) and the cars speed (heat) would be ultimately determined by the ‘hills’ or ohms of your element.

    Note: resistance changes slightly as metal heats and cools, not just by changing out your elements.

  12. Great article. It’s partially true especially for the VV versions. On the VW versions it is somewhat wrong. On many of the VW like my subbox mini the voltage is constant. What it does is change the pulse with and therefore the average current. (Amps) The more amps the more watts.

    Ohms law P=IE
    P=Power (watts)
    I=current (amps)
    E=Voltage (Volts)

  13. What can you tell me about temp control? I just purchased a ELEAF TV 40 watt and really don’t understand the TC …..

      • Hi Nikki, I am a total newbie to vaping and also purchased the eleaf iStick TC40W. The header is a 0.5 Ohm. My personal preference is a cooler vape and I could care less about the size of the cloud. Also using 6mg juice.

        Through lots of trial and error I have found 35.0 Watts gives me the experience I prefer so far. The good news is that I haven’t had a cig since Jan. 2 and I was a 20 cig a day smoker.

        I also have an eleaf ijust2 which is now my backup as I prefer the iStick.

  14. I still didnt understand these instructions.I’m not getting enough smoke when I inhale and when I turn up the VW it tastes burnt or chokes me. I don’t know what# the V or W needs to be set. I’ve changed the coil. Could my battery or atomizer be bad??? Purchased 7/2015. How do I tell when they’ve gone out? My settings: 38π over 6.0V and 9.7w
    I’m trying not to smoke a cigarette now!

  15. Finally! An article that I could finally understand! I have used a variable voltage stick from day one and after (many) trials and errors, figured out that the lower resistance on my coil, then the voltage has to be lower (around 4 volts for me) in order to avoid the burnt taste. Then just this week I bought a new iTaste stick that has variable voltage AND variable watts. NO WHERE could I find a concise explanation on how to set the volts and watts. Do I set just one or the other? Or do I have to set both? If so, what settings? Confusion, confusion, confusion! Then I made the serious mistake of asking my fiancé, who is an electrical engineer. Want to get really confused? Ask an electrical engineer! After a 30 minute lecture of ohms, volts, and watts, he noticed my comatose stare. Asked me if I had any questions and I said, “Just one. Which would be more painful? Death by strangulation or death by blunt object? You choose.” Soooo, back to the web I go. Finally found your website. Yessss! I mean, c’mon. How hard is it to just explain you can adjust the volts or the watts, but not both? Found the answer here! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I don’t want to know all the details about electricity, I just want to vape instead of smoking cigarettes. Is that so dang hard to understand? Thanks to you I not only have the knowledge I need to use my variable voltage/watt ecig, but I’ve also decided to let my electrical engineer fiancé live a while longer! Thanks again!

  16. Good on you.. Great way to fix this madness . Got taste vw. 6 to 11 w.. With 1.8 resistor.. Usually 7.0 w is ok but hot throat hit.. Not sure wether to go a mod style.. Wots better????.thanks again

    I have a 50W cloupor mini plus mod with a stillare v2 dripper with a dual sleeper coil pointed at 0.41 ohms. I usually vape it at 30w maybe 40w with a 6 mg of nicotine juice because it gives me a kinda big throat hit. After reading this article I tried to play a bit with my voltage mode on the mod (I haven’t used it so far) and when I’m using it I looses all the throat hit. I’m a beginner and I just wanted to ask if this thing is normal 🙂 cheers
